Planning Lessons
Prompt 1 — ALN Lesson Structure
"I'm teaching [concept] to [grade] students. Can you help me plan a lesson using the ALN structure — Launch, Main Lesson, and Closure?"
Ask for a specific Launch type (e.g., number string, visual image) to get more targeted suggestions.
Prompt 2 — Low-Floor, High-Ceiling Tasks
"Can you suggest a low-floor, high-ceiling task for [grade] students working on [concept]? I want all students to have an entry point."
Great for mixed-readiness classrooms — every student can start, and there's room to go deep.
Prompt 3 — Concrete Tools & Manipulatives
"What concrete tools or manipulatives would support [grade] students exploring [concept]? How can students use them to discover the math themselves?"
Specify if you want independent exploration ideas — AI Math Coach will avoid suggesting teacher-led demonstrations.
Supporting Student Discourse
Prompt 4 — Getting Students Talking
"My [grade] students are quiet during math discussions. What structures or routines can I try to get more students sharing their thinking?"
Try asking for a specific routine like "turn and talk" or "gallery walk" to get concrete suggestions.
Prompt 5 — Eliciting Student Thinking
"What questions can I ask [grade] students to help them explain their thinking during a lesson on [concept]?"
Ask for questions at different levels — opening, probing, and extending — for a full toolkit.
Prompt 6 — Number Talk or Launch Planning
"Can you help me plan a number talk or launch for [grade] students that connects to [concept] and gets them reasoning before the main lesson?"
Mention if you want a visual image, number string, estimation, or "Which One Doesn't Belong?" format.
Analyzing Student Work
Prompt 7 — Interpreting Student Work
"Here's what a [grade] student did on a [concept] problem: [describe or paste work]. What does this tell me about their understanding?"
The more detail you share, the more specific the coaching you'll get back.
Prompt 8 — Patterns Across the Class
"Many of my [grade] students are [describe pattern, e.g., skipping steps, using only one strategy]. What might this tell me, and what should I try next?"
Useful after exit tickets or formative checks — helps you plan your next small group or whole class move.
Prompt 9 — Planning Follow-Up Tasks
"Based on what I'm seeing in student work on [concept], what follow-up task or activity would help students build on their current thinking?"
Ask for tasks that require students to compare strategies or justify their reasoning for deeper engagement.
Finding Resources
Prompt 10 — Games & Activities
"Can you find a math game or activity for [grade] students practicing [concept]? I'd like something students can do independently or with a partner."
Mention if you want something for Math Menu, small group, or whole class to get the best match.
Prompt 11 — Problem Solvers
"Can you find a Problem Solver task for [grade] students working on [concept]? I want something that requires reasoning, not just computation."
Problem Solvers work great as Math Menu choices or as a Main Lesson task for the whole class.
Prompt 12 — Building a Math Menu
"Can you help me build a Math Menu for [grade] students focused on [concept]? I need a game, a Problem Solver, a journal prompt, and a windowpane."
AI Math Coach will search the resource library first and create custom materials if nothing is found.
